Hardgoods Product Developer

This full-time position is a key member of the NHS Hardgoods Development staff, reporting to the Hardgoods Department Manager, working closely with members of the Hardgoods Department and Creative team. This role requires daily communication with manufacturers concerning product specifications, reviewing, and processing samples, as well as working closely with artists and brand managers. This position relies heavily on the consistency and conformity with product development standards and timelines. Success in this role requires the ability to work independently while maintaining a high level of attention to detail.

Job Responsibilities: 

  • Responsible for reviewing style guides for accuracy to ensure files and artwork are clear and consistent for vendors
  • Prepare and maintain technical specification and BOM sheets, upload files to vendor FTP sites
  • Keep style guides and technical sheets updated based on changes in development cycle 
  • Analyze and evaluate skate product samples, clearly communicate comments to vendors regarding aesthetics, technical details, and quality 
  • Develop and maintain a high standard of communication with domestic and overseas vendors
  • Generate and monitor Ziflow proofs for sample review by artists and brand managers
  • Research new aesthetic treatments with vendors to suggest use in future product lines
  • Keep calendar tasks updated in Asana to reflect current development status
  • Assist with organizing, tagging, rotating, and archiving hardgood development samples 
  • Review and confirm seasonal set-up and tooling fees for Purchasing
  • Maintain master development MOQ and set-up fee reference file for Development and Creative
  • Participate in QA evaluation of seasonal production samples and periodically review product in warehouse
  • Work with R&D and vendors to help resolve issues discovered during QA related to aesthetics, color, and quality 
  • Participate in regular vendor calls on status of development and production
  • Procure development workshop supplies, stock and display various treatment options from vendors 
  • Assist with work order scheduling/communication for NHS hardgoods manufacturing 
  • Other duties as assigned by Hardgoods Department Manager

Required Experience/Qualifications: 

  • 3-5 years product development experience. Open to experience in adjacent product categories outside of hardgoods
  • Demonstrate a strong working knowledge of the product development and manufacturing processes
  • Experience with style guides and the ability to prepare technical packages for a diverse range of products 
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of understanding spot and process color
  • Curious mindset, with proactive drive to research and analyze new aesthetics for creative teams  
  • Committed to excellence and high-quality product build standards

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills. Able to manage and track finite details
  • Maintains a positive attitude and strong enthusiasm for their work and the products they develop

  • Demonstrates strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience or demonstrated knowledge of .jpeg image manipulation/optimization
  • Proficiency with Adobe Illustrator, MS Excel and Outlook; Asana and Ziflow experience a plus  
  • Genuine interest/passion for the skateboarding industry and making the highest quality/fun products
  • Able to work 40+ hours a week at our Santa Cruz, CA office

Physical requirements:

  • Must live near or be willing to relocate to Santa Cruz, CA
  • Must possess ability to see and interpret PMS colors
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 30lbs
  • Must be willing and able to travel (domestic or overseas) one to two times a year
